Differential Lock |
A device for temporarily locking the rear differential to achieve better traction. |
Displacement |
The total volume of air/ fuel mixture an engine can draw in during one complete engine cycle. |
Draft Control |
A mechanical linkage that adjusts the towing characteristics of an implement on the 3-point-hitch (3PH) . |
Drawbar |
A flat horizontal bar attached to the rear of the tractor, used for dragging or towing. May be attached to the frame at a fixed height, allowing for variation in the distance between the tractor and implement to be towed. Alternatively, may be attached between the lower links of the 3-point-hitch (3PH) to provide variable height, but at a fixed distance from the tractor. |
Drivetrain Efficiency |
Ratio of gross engine horsepower transferred to the power-take-off (PTO) divided by gross engine horsepower. This ratio is important to understand because most tractor applications, like finish mowing, rotary tilling, posthole digging, and rotary cutting, rely on the rear or mid PTO to get the job done. |
Gross Engine Horsepower |
Horsepower is an indication of how capable a vehicle is at moving itself around and consequently the more horsepower a vehicle possesses, the quicker it can move between point A and point B. One mechanical horsepower of 550 foot-pounds per second is equivalent to 745.7 watts. |
HST Transmission |
Varies the tractors forward and reverse speeds within a gear range based on pressure applied by a lever or a foot pedal. |
Hydraulics |
A system of pressurised oil which provides power for raising and lowering the 3PH and which can be used to operate attached or towed implements having hydraulic pistons and cylinders. Live hydraulics maintain oil pressure to the system even when the clutch is disengaged. |
Power Take Off (PTO) Horsepower |
PTO’s can be located at the rear, middle (beneath) or front of the tractor. PTO horsepower is the power that does the work of attached implements. |
Live PTO |
A live power-take-off (PTO) will continue to rotate independently of the tractor drive train. |
Continuous-running PTO |
Power to operate both the transmission and the power take off is transmitted through a master clutch. Both operate only when the master clutch is engaged. |
Independent PTO |
Power to operate the transmission and power take off is transmitted through independent transmission and power take-off clutches. |
Transmission driven PTO |
Power to operate both the transmission and the power take-off is transmitted through a master clutch, which serves primarily as a traction clutch. |
Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) |
A roll bar or similar device mounted on the tractor that is designed to protect the operator if the machine tips over. |
SuperSteer™ |
Industry exclusive feature to New Holland that offers an exceptionally small turnaround diameter,(measuring from the centre point of the rear axle). |
Sensitrak™ |
Automatically engages FWD when the job requires it and automatically disengages when it is no longer needed. |
3-pt. hitch (3PH) |
A popular standardised mechanism for attaching implements, consisting of an adjustable top (pivot) link centred above two lower (lifting) links. Category 0, 1, 2 or 3 refers to both the size of the connecting pins and the strength of the components, with category 0 being the smallest (often seen on garden tractors and implements) and category 3 being the largest (often seen on large agricultural equipment). |
Turning Radius |
The distance from the turning centre to the centre of tyre contact with the road. It describes the largest circle made while the machine is executing the sharpest practicable turn. |
